What they did. YouTube paid $24.5 million in September 2025 to settle President Trump’s 2021 deplatforming suit. About $22 million of it went to the Trust for the National Mall to support the White House ballroom. Google separately gave $5 million to the ballroom and $1 million to the inauguration. Five days before the settlement, Alphabet’s counsel sent House Judiciary a “statement of facts” saying the Biden administration had “pressed” the company on COVID-era content.
What Democrats have said and done. Sens. Warren, Sanders, Wyden and Welch wrote Google and YouTube on Aug. 7, 2025, before the settlement, warning the company “against breaking anti-bribery laws.” [Warren press release] After the settlement Warren sent a follow-up letter and Sens. Wyden, Merkley and colleagues sent a separate letter on the “potential quid-pro-quo settlement.” [Wyden press release]
Rep. Raskin wrote YouTube CEO Neal Mohan on Oct. 30, 2025 seeking documents and a transcribed interview, calling Alphabet’s statement to the committee a “coerced confession that directly contradicts employees’ testimony to Congress.” [House Judiciary Democrats] Sens. Warren and Bennet questioned Google’s inaugural donation in January 2025. [Letters] Sen. Blumenthal sent ballroom-donor letters to every disclosed donor on Oct. 24, 2025. [Blumenthal press release] Sens. Whitehouse, Peters and Heinrich named Google’s $5 million gift in their Oct. 30, 2025 letter to the President on “pay-to-play corruption.” [Letter] Google was pulled into Raskin’s ICE-tracking-app inquiry in June 2026. Why it intensifies. Reuters reports Alphabet has already received pre-subpoena records requests and is named in target discussions. [Reuters] Google appears on every reported Democratic target list from February 2026 onward. The combination of a payment routed to a presidential project, pending antitrust remedies, and a statement to Congress that Raskin says is contradicted by sworn testimony gives a Judiciary chairman three separate threads to pull. Google told senators there was no discussion linking the settlement to any official action.
