What they did. The SEC dismissed its enforcement case against Coinbase in 2025. Coinbase gave to the inauguration and the ballroom and spent roughly $46 million on the 2024 election cycle. It is listed among ballroom donors with business before the administration.
What Democrats have said and done. Sen. Chris Murphy tied Coinbase’s donations to the dropped SEC case in October 2025, describing a “corruption factory”; Coinbase called the claim “ridiculous.” [The Block] [Cryptonews] Reps. Waters, Casten and Sherman wrote SEC Chair Atkins on Jan. 14, 2026 citing the appearance of “pay-to-play” in the dropped Coinbase, Ripple, Kraken and Justin Sun matters. [Letter] [CoinDesk] Sen. Blumenthal’s Oct. 24, 2025 ballroom-donor letters went to Coinbase. [Blumenthal] Rep. Stansbury named Coinbase as a ballroom donor at the July 21, 2026 Garcia-Blumenthal shadow hearing. Garcia’s “Trump Digital Grift Tracker” (Jan. 2026) keeps crypto inside Oversight’s frame. [Oversight Democrats]
Why it intensifies. POLITICO’s Oct. 5, 2026 reporting says Coinbase and Ripple are within reach of the financial committees under a Chair Waters. [POLITICO] Binance has the more dramatic story (the Zhao pardon, the $2 billion USD1 deal), but it is offshore; Coinbase is the U.S.-reachable company that would sit at the witness table in a Financial Services review of the SEC’s retreat from enforcement. Coinbase says its ballroom gift was a check to a nonprofit and the SEC case was meritless on its own terms.
